Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, an Indian biographical drama, is based on the life of Nambi Narayanan. Nambi Narayanan. Narayanan is a former scientist and aerospace engineer of the Indian Space Research Organisation who was accused of espionage and later exonerated. The story of the Indian rocket scientist remained unknown till now. R. Madhavan, the writer, producer, director and lead hero of this film, took the challenge to bring this untold story to the common people. Who Is Nambi Narayanan?

Nambi Narayanan is a Padma Bhushan awarded Indian aerospace engineer who worked at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). In 1974, in return for 100 man-years of engineering work from ISRO, Societe Europeenne de Propulsion agreed to transfer the Viking engine technology. Narayanan led a team of forty engineers for the project.

What Happened In 1994?

Dr. Nambi Narayanan came into the limelight in 1994 when the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested him on false espionage charges. He was also accused of selling sensitive flight test data for millions. The scientist spent 50 days in jail. Narayanan reported that he was forced to make false accusations against top ISRO officials and when he refused he was tortured.

However, the CBI submitted a closure report, in 1996, stating that there was no espionage and that the testimonies of the suspects were coerced by torture. The Supreme Court dismissed the charges in 1998 and declared him not guilty.

Rallying for Justice

He approached National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), in 2001, stating that he was physically and mentally tortured. He was awarded Rs 10 lakh for the interim damages on March 14, 2001. Later, in 2012, the Kerala government dropped charges against police officials who falsely implicated Narayanan. He was later given a compensation of Rs 1.3 crore by the Kerala government. A three-judge Bench also awarded Dr. Narayanan Rs. 50 lakh in compensation for the “mental cruelty” he suffered all these years.

Rocketry: The Nambi Effect revolves around Narayanan’s days as a graduate student at Princeton University. It also spans his efforts before exploring his work as a scientist and the false espionage charges placed upon him. For the script, Madhavan also took inspiration from Arun Ram’s official biography of the scientist titled Ready To Fire: How India. He also studied I Survived the ISRO Spy Case (2018) and Narayanan’s autobiography Ormakalude Bhramanapadham (2017). There are two songs in the film composed by Billy Dawson and Nate Cornell, American country musicians from Tennessee.

Rocketry was announced in October 2018. It is filmed in English, Tamil and Hindi. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on 19 May 2022. It was theatrically released on 1 July 2022.

The film is distributed worldwide by Yash Raj Films and Phars Film Co, with UFO Moviez. The Tamil version of the movie was distributed by Udhayanidhi Stalin’s Red Giant Movies in Tamil Nadu, and AGS Cinemas.
