Where Does India Stand in ICC World Cup Super League?

While the world is waiting for the IPL to start on 9th April 2021, there are waves being made in the ICC world cup super league. With the recent win over South Africa Pakistan has jumped to no.2 position just below the world champions England. A look at the ICC World Cup Super League Points Table projects a grim picture for India but is that something to worry about?

Let’s have a look at where India stands on the table currently and what’s the way forward.

What is ICC World Cup Super League?

ICC World Cup Super League is an ongoing One Day International league that serves as part of the Cricket World Cup qualification process. The Super League for WC 2023 started in July 2020 with the series between England and Ireland and will end in March 2023. The league features 13 teams and each team will play an ODI series against eight of the other twelve teams, four series at home and four away.

Each Super League series consists of 3 ODI matches. During the league matches, the winning team gets 10 points for a win. In case of a draw or no result or match abandonment, each team gets 5 points. The losing team gets no point for the match.

In addition to this, in case a team is behind the required over-rate at the end of a match, 1 point is deducted for each over it is behind. India too lost 1 point for a slow over-rate against Australia.

Quite recently India grabbed 20 points in the Super League after defeating the world champions England by 2-1 on 18, March 2021. After the series, India moved to Rank 7 on the tally pushing Pakistan to no. 8 position. However, it got pushed to no.8 after Pakistan won the series over South Africa.

A quick look at the table paints a not-so-good image for India, however, if we look at some other data then it isn’t so bad for India. Have a look at the ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings.

As it can be seen, India’s ODI track record is very good and it is just that since July 2020 India has played only 2 series. The Indian cricket team is already over with 2 of the strongest contestants England and Australia. It won the series against England (2-1) and lost the series from Australia (1-2).

India also has a lot of cricket ahead of it and the current team is in great form. With a lot of young talent coming in we have no doubts that India will end up in the Top 3 teams in the super league.

If you are still worried about India’s chances then you should know that India has already qualified for the World Cup 2023. This is because India is going to host Cricket WC 2023 and the host team qualifies by default.

However, we will still look forward to India topping the charts by the time the qualification process is completed. If you liked our analysis then please do tell us in the comments.
