Dobaaraa movie review: It’s a shocker from Anurag Kashyap, and Taapsee Pannu, 5 stars

Adaptations and remakes can also be exciting if they are created with the intention of engaging and entertaining their audiences. Dobaaraa, directed by Anurag Kashyap and starring Taapsee Pannu and Pavail Gulati, is an engrossing and riveting tale that keeps you hooked from the first to the last frame, barely giving you time for popcorn and bathroom breaks.

Dobaaraa- Plot

Antara Bhatt (Taapsee) discovers a TV in her new home’s closet and sees a 12-year-old boy talking to her 25 years ago. Taapsee’s quest to save this young boy who communicates with her through the television set is central to Dobaaraa. She does, but tinkering with the fabric of time leads her astray. The next morning, she discovers that her life has changed, that her husband is now married to another woman, and that her child never existed. The rest of the movie follows Antara’s desperate attempts to reclaim her life before it’s too late. The film is set against the backdrop of a storm, which is crucial to the central plot.

Actor’s Performance

Taapsee perfectly portrays Antara’s frantic expressions after the butterfly effect of her actions disrupts her life. Antara also meets a good-looking cop, Chandan, played by Pavail Gulati, who plays an important role in the plot.

Movie Reviews

Though Dobaaraa contains supernatural elements, it is primarily about a mother’s desperate search for her daughter and a boy’s desire to convince the world of his story. Unlike Paulo, whose films are in high demand for Hindi adaptations, Anurag has the rare ability to exit the narrative, assume the role of the audience, make a remark about the absurdity of the situation, and then get on with the job with conviction. It is this type of handholding that the audience requires for a subject like Dobaaraa, which becomes obscure after a certain point.

Anurag ensures that the sci-fi genre loses its stiffness in Indian conditions, whether it’s the application of the Terminator reference or a sarcastic remark on a man’s infidelity across timelines, and, along with writer Nihit Bhave, has made the complex premise more accessible.
