7 Signs that tell you that you’ll be friends forever

Pulitzer-winning author Harper Lee said, “You can choose your friends, but not your family.” I am sorry Harper Lee but you were wrong because you don’t choose friends; your friends choose you to be their friend. More so true about friends forever. I have been blessed with some crazy friends who chose me and I will forever be thankful to them for this honour.

I am thankful to God to bless me with their companionship and the comfort of knowing that they are there for me. And I am also annoyed with God to take away one of my best friends at such a young age. I am inclined to agree with Sherrilyn Kenyon that even Gods make mistakes, they’ve made a big one this time.

This is the first time we are carrying a story inspired by a person. This one is dedicated to Gaurav Anand, the wonderful human, cherished friend and a remarkable father, husband, brother and son. You will remain a dear friend forever and will be missed forever.

Educational institutions are the best breeding grounds for lifelong relationships. The beauty of it is that almost everyone leaves their college with at least one friend they can reach out at just about any time for just about anything.

A great friendship is akin to its much-hyped counterpart – Love. It’s actually better because it is always tacit. You don’t have to propose friendship, it happens naturally. The gravitational pull is so strong that you just can’t pull apart, nor do you let anyone pull you apart. So, what do these rare creatures called BFFs look like? How do you know you’ve found one?

The answers are simple – they look just like anybody and if you’ve found them they won’t go unnoticed. Hence there’s no need to look for signs but if you are still interested then go ahead and read on.

It would just happen – Effortlessly!

The first and foremost sign of a forever-lasting friendship is that you don’t have to put effort into it. It doesn’t sweep you off your feet like love but it flows around you like a nice breeze that makes you happy and carefree. So if you are with someone with whom you can be 100% yourself then you are 50% there already.

You’ll fight but you won’t have to say sorry

Friends argue, sulk and fight as well but it doesn’t have to end with a sorry – a punch in the gut or a pat on the back would suffice. In India, it can almost always be settled with the choicest of abuses in a friendly tone. Whatever one may feel about it, it works like a charm, irrespective of your gender.

Time and distance won’t matter

You may not meet your BFF for months but when you do, it’s like you were with him partying last night. If you are in a different city, state or country, it just takes one call to feel them talking as if they have their arm around your shoulder. Reunions always look like a brawl but you are not rediscovering each other. You notice expanding waistlines, receding hairlines, growing wrinkles and that salt and pepper look but behind all that it’s the same old pal who has a part of your heart that even your partner can’t own.

Best friends come with their family

BFFs don’t keep families away from each other. The families know and they know your best friends very well. Not only that, your bond is so strong that your friends and your family care about each other and they enjoy each others’ company. Their spouse/partner would know all your mischiefs and they’ll know your spouse/partner well enough to playfully threaten you about spilling the beans.

They won’t cry alone

Their world has other people, other friends, colleagues and sometimes you might not hear from them for long. People get busy with their lives and they might enjoy and laugh with other people in their life. But when they are in pain, they turn to family and their best friends. If a friend leaned on your shoulder for support then you should consider yourself blessed for one can’t share one’s pain with you if one doesn’t trust you and your presence and words don’t soothe them.

They know you won’t judge them

If you have got a distress call from your friend when he just wanted to be heard knowing they won’t be judged, then you have earned a great friend. Not judging someone is easy, having trust in another person that they won’t judge you is a big leap of faith that doesn’t come easy. Never leave a friend who has put such faith in you.

They won’t leave your side

Friends don’t leave you and I can say that with absolute certainty. Rather they chase you to enquire about your well-being if you are not being very communicative. The more you ignore the more they will chase you. They will pester you to the point where you open up and share.

Even when might not be physically present for you but they are always there with you. The way Gaurav will always remain with us, forever.

I don’t want to stop writing today but then I have to remind you and give you time to call all your BFFs and tell them how precious they are. Go on and make the call, whatever time and place you are reading this, speak from your heart and tell them that they mean the world to you and you’ll always be there for them. Before it is too late.
